Break garlic into cloves, with peels left on.
Place in small, greased baking dish.
Bake in preheated oven at 300° for 30 to 45 minutes, or just until soft.
Cool until you can handle the garlic.
Cut off end of each clove and squeeze garlic into small bowl.
Mash with fork to make smooth paste.
Stir in butter, Parmesan, basil and pepper.
Cut bread into 1/2-inch slices, without cutting right through to the bottom.
Spread garlic mixture on both sides of slices.
Brush top of bread with oil.
Wrap in foil, leaving a couple of inches open at the top.
Bake in preheated 350° oven 20 - 30 minutes, until top is crisp and bread is heated through.
